The DevTeam has released an update to the popular RedSn0w, tools required to perform the jailbreak, leading to version 0.9.6b5. With this new update has been introduced ability to update the baseband to version 06.15 only on iPhone 3G and 3G, which start from 05.14 or 05.15. I remember the baseband firmware is the part that handles only the phone and where this might be the SIM lock, if you bought the iPhone in a foreign country (like the U.S.) where it is sold exclusively with a contract of a given operator (eg, AT & T).
This version has been extracted from the baseband firmware dell'iPad but can also operate on the iPhone. Why, then put it on your iPhone 3G or 3G? Because it can be unlocked (SIM lock removed) with Ultrasn0w , a tool present in Cydia.
ATTENTION But, after you update the baseband to version 6.15 you will be in this situation:
- On Baseband can no longer be an upgrade or a downgrade;
- The warranty will be invalidated forever (not just a recovery back to the initial situation);
- can no longer perform an official Apple firmware update through iTunes, but to upgrade the only solution will be to install a CustomFirmware, with all the complexities of the case.
So strongly do not recommend the implementation of such a procedure to unlock, why not insert any connection (link) in this post.
From now on if you buy an iPhone 3G or 3G used that factory locked (and therefore purchased abroad with SIM lock) Find out if this procedure was performed, at least if you decide to buy it aware of the limitations that go in against.
The version of the baseband can be determined via the Settings menu -> General -> Info under modem firmware. At this writing, the Journal for the baseband firmware 4.2.1 (latest release) for iPhone 3G and 3G is the 05.15.
